10 Ways to Transform Your Grilled Cheese from Ordinary to Extraordinary

Published on 6 November 2024 at 15:35

I love grilled cheese sandwiches because they bring out the happy child in me. It’s hard to say no to two slices of

delicious, crispy, buttery bread oozing with melted cheese. I could eat them for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

and I usually find a way to justify having more than one. Although this iconic sandwich is perfection in its

simplicity, sometimes I like to get creative and add a little something extra to keep things fun! Here are my top

10 suggestions for taking this beloved classic to the next level.

Make the best grilled cheese sandwich.

1. Gourmet Cheese

You obviously can’t have a grilled cheese sandwich without the cheese, but you can

definitely experiment with different options. American and cheddar fall under the classics

category, and although they’ve earned their place when it comes to satisfaction, I have a

a few more fancy suggestions when you’re in the mood for an upgrade. I’ve founded that

Gruyere, Gouda, and Brie are excellent substitutions for the usuals. There are unlimited

other delicious options to choose from, but in my opinion, those never disappoint.

Another tasty tip is to combine 2 or more cheeses for the ultimate treat. If I have it on

hand, I usually can’t resist adding a little bleu cheese to any other cheese I might be

using. So, the next time you’re heating up your grill, be bold with your cheese choices!

2. Caramelized Onions

In my opinion, onions are the superheroes of vegetables, because they have the power

to transform something that would otherwise be bland into a flavorful work of art for your

palette. Simply said, the addition of caramelized grilled onions to your classic grilled

cheese will take your tastebuds to another level. I prefer sweet onion, but you can use,

red, white, or any kind you like. After slicing your onions, cook them on low for

approximately 20 minutes with olive oil or butter. Once they’re golden, pile them onto

your sandwich and then just try to wait patiently until this harmonious concoction is

ready to be plated.

3. Bacon

Bacon and cheese are besties. This is a winning combination for endless recipes in general, so why not

reintroduce them in your next grilled cheese sandwich? Be careful, because just a tiny touch of crispy,

crunchy, savory bacon might make you an addict of this combo! I don’t always have bacon on hand in my

house, because I’m weak and can’t control myself, but if the price is right in the grocery store and it

accidentally ends up in my shopping cart, I have to use it, because I couldn’t stand to be considered

wasteful! I very highly recommend this indulgence for everyone who appreciates the perks of living for

the moment without regrets!

4. Different Breads

I think white bread and cheese go together like peas and carrots, but mixing things up by exploring

different bread options for your next grilled cheese event could change everything! Sourdough, rye,

wheat, and brioche are my favorite stand-ins for regular white bread, but don’t follow my advice here, just

use one of your own tried and true favorites. Trust me, you shouldn’t hesitate to substitute one of

your favorite breads for the classic choice, because the odds are in your favor that it will be rewarding!

Follow your instincts and enjoy the results, then share your new secret with everyone you know!

5. Add a Spread

A good spread can change everything. Try a flavored mayonnaise, pesto, any aioli, or Dijon mustard for extra

flavor. I especially love adding garlic aioli with any combination of cheeses. Adding mayonnaise on the outside

of the bread instead of butter makes it extra crispy and golden. I’ve used this little trick on friends who say they

can’t stand mayo, and they’ve raved about my grilled cheese sandwiches! Also, if you like a little spice, try a chili

or sriracha sauce. Small additions of your favorite spreads can have a major flavor impact.

Master the grilled cheese sandwich.

6. Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs can make a big difference. I think they add a fancy element, and I’ll add whatever fresh herbs I

have on hand if I’m trying to impress someone with my grilled cheese skills. Cilantro with pepper jack cheese is

one of my favorite combinations. Basil, mozzarella, and fresh tomato is another winning combo. Rosemary and

thyme are also welcome additions with any type of Swiss or cheddar cheese. This is another opportunity to

experiment and have fun with your favorites. Herbs add a lot of depth and can give your grilled cheese a

refreshing upgrade.

7. Fresh or Roasted Veggies

Vegetables will add crunch to your sandwich and also add a nice balance to the cheese. When I’m feeling the

need for change, I like adding bell peppers to my grilled cheese. I’ve used fresh and roasted, and I think both are

fantastic. Generally, I prefer fresh veggies in warmer months, and roasted veggies when the weather is a little

cooler. Zucchini and squash are delicious too. My ultimate favorites are spinach, mushrooms, and artichokes.

I’ve used all of them together and separately, and I think they’re especially delicious with either Monterey Jack

or goat cheese.

8. Fruit

I highly recommend trying fruit and cheese for your next grilled cheese sandwich. Don’t knock this pairing

until you try it! Granny Smith apples and cheddar cheese always feel like fall to me. Other favorites are sliced

pears with Brie, and grilled peaches with goat cheese. I’m fortunate to live across the street from a farmer’s

market, so I always have access to the best fresh seasonal fruits, but your local grocery store’s offerings will

work just as well. In addition to the fruit, sometimes I’ll add a little honey or even fig jam for just a little more

sweetness. This brings more complexity and balance to the sandwich. Just go with whatever combo speaks to

you at the moment!

9. Nuts

This choice may be more for the bold. If you’re looking for a really unique twist, you might want to try adding

nuts to your sandwich. They have a rich flavor and will add a satisfying crunch. If you’re in the mood for a bold

change, I would suggest trying chopped walnuts, pecans, or even almonds. From my experience, these all seem

to pair well with soft cheeses like Camembert or Brie. Honey and fig jam are again a welcoming addition to

balance everything out with some sweetness.

10. Seasonings

One of the easiest ways to enhance your grilled cheese is by adding seasonings that you likely already have in

your pantry. The sky’s the limit here. Sometimes keeping things simple seems best, and I like just cheese and a

little bit of spice. Other times, the addition of spices to any of the previous suggestions can add another

delicious element to your masterpieces. Flavored salts, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and paprika are some

of my go-tos. I’ve also been known to use crushed red pepper flakes for a little heat. Adding spices is another

delicious way to elevate the taste of your grilled cheese sandwich.

Create the ultimate grilled cheese sandwich.

In conclusion, I think eating a grilled cheese sandwich is one of the simple

joys of life. I hope you’ve enjoyed these suggestions for transforming your

own grilled cheese sandwiches and feel inspired to start experimenting. Get

creative and mix and match. There are no right or wrong ways as long as

you’re having fun!
